As a condition for getting reinstated by the Brooklyn Nets in November, Kyrie Irving apologized for sharing anti-Semitic material in an Instagram post.
However, that message is no longer on his account.
The Athletic’s Sam Amick noted that Irving deleted the Instagram apology post.
It’s unclear when he did so, but it appears Irving removed the message before the Nets traded him to the Dallas Mavericks. Yahoo Sports’ Ben Rohbrach said Irving deleted the message in a piece published Jan. 20.
Onlookers are now questioning whether Irving ever meant anything he wrote.
“This isn’t a great look. It’s just an IG post, but Kyrie’s initial lack of an apology led many to wonder if the eventual one was sincere,” Nets Daily’s Alec Sturm said. “This makes it seem like the apology was just done for the Nets’ organization.”
“It’s almost like the apology — which LeBron James and Jay Williams on down touted as reason Kyrie should be allowed to return to play — wasn’t sincere to begin with,”
The Forward’s Louis Keene wrote.
“Nothing says how deeply *not* sorry you are like diving into your timeline, looking for, and deleting an apology,” a fan said.
“When someone tells you who they are believe them,” a fan wrote, referencing a famous Maya Angelou quote.
“Good luck Dallas,” another fan said.
Irving sat out eight games after posting the link to a film containing Holocaust conspiracy theories. The Nets lifted the suspension after he fulfilled multiple conditions, including meeting with Jewish community leaders and publicly apologizing.
The Nets ended a drama-filled relationship by trading Irving and Markieff Morris to the Mavericks for Spencer Dinwiddie, Dorian Finney-Smith, and multiple draft picks. Irving could make his Dallas debut Wednesday night against the Los Angeles Clippers.
