The Lakers have been linked to Kyrie Irving for the past few months. That being said, it doesn’t sound like he’ll join forces with LeBron James anytime soon.
According to Jovan Buha of The Athletic, the Lakers are unlikely to pursue Irving in the offseason due to their lack of cap space.
In order to create enough cap space for Irving, the Lakers would have to renounce the free agent rights of D’Angelo Russell and Rui Hachimura. They would also have to waive Jarred Vanderbilt and Mo Bamba.
“Choosing Irving would essentially force the Lakers to punt on their trade deadline additions,” Buha said.
NBA fans seem to be torn over this situation.
On one hand, there are a lot of fans who think Irving is more valuable than all the Lakers’ trade-deadline acquisitions combined. On the other hand, some people don’t love the idea of Los Angeles getting rid of all its depth for one player.

“Anyone who thinks Kyrie is better than those who are named don’t know basketball,” another fan wrote. “I would rather have depth than a star who could ruin the franchise at any moment.”

From an individual standpoint, Irving would give the Lakers a huge upgrade at point guard. That doesn’t necessarily mean it’s the right move though.
Do you think the Lakers should pursue Irving in free agency?
