Ja Morant is taking a two-game “leave of absence” from the Memphis Grizzlies after posting a video of himself with a gun on social media.
Memphis announced their decision on Morant Saturday afternoon, with Nike, the guard’s shoe sponsor, chiming in with a statement of their own tonight.
“We appreciate Ja’s accountability and that he is taking the time to get the help he needs. We support his prioritization of his well-being,” Nike said, via The Athletic’s Shams Charania.
Nike’s choice of words for this statement caught the attention of many.
“Wait @Nike ‘prioritizing of his well-being?’ He flashed a gun on IG live while at a club, and got suspended,” one person said. “Let’s not make this time off into something he’s doing voluntarily for his mental health.”
“I appreciate the spin from all parties here that a two-game suspension for flashing a gun on IG after like two weeks of weird Ja Morant gun conflict stories is actually a positive self-help journey,” added writer Matt Carey.
“Ja’s Nike bag is safe…for now,” chimed in sports anchor Matt Infield.
We also recommend perusing the responses on here that mention the disparity between Nike’s reaction to Morant’s controversies and Kyrie Irving’s.
Morant will miss games against the Clippers and Lakers and could potentially return on Thursday to face the Golden State Warriors.
