Ja Morant will not rejoin the Memphis Grizzlies anytime soon.
According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, the 23-year-old entered a counseling program in Florida. It’s unclear when he’ll return to the team.
Onlookers hope Morant gets the help he needs during his absence.
“Get it done Ja and make sure you don’t return to those same enablers unless they change as well!” former NBA player Eddie Johnson wrote on Twitter.
“Good for Ja. There’s nothing wrong with having to get help for the issues you are struggling with. Basketball can wait,” Grizzlies analyst Jon Roser said. “Do what you need to do to be the best you can be as a person and father.”
“Hopefully he gets the help he needs and this becomes a minor blip in a Hall of Fame career,” David P. Samson said.
“Praying for him and his peace of mind,” sportscaster Chris Williamson wrote.
Morant, who was averaging 27.1 points per game this season, last played at Denver on March 3. The following day, he appeared to flash a gun at a strip club in a video posted to his Instagram Live.
After police determined last week he’d face no criminal charges, the Grizzlies said he won’t rejoin them for at least four more games. It now looks likely he’ll miss more time.
