Vanessa Bryant received nearly $29 million in an agreement with Los Angeles County following her lawsuit regarding photos that were taken of the accident scene of her late husband and daughter’s helicopter crash.
Tuesday’s settlement also includes the $16 million–which was later reduced to $15 million–that Bryant was awarded by a federal jury in August 2021. The jury ruled at the time that the LA County Fire and Police departments infringed on the constitutional rights of Bryant and her co-plaintiff Christopher Chester for taking and disseminating photos of the crash site.
“Today marks the successful culmination of Mrs. Bryant’s courageous battle to hold accountable those who engaged in this grotesque conduct,” said Bryant’s attorney Luis Li in a statement to CNN. “She fought for her husband, her daughter, and all those in the community whose deceased family were treated with similar disrespect. We hope her victory at trial and this settlement will put an end to this practice.”
Bryant’s settlement win has elicited plenty of reaction on social media.
“Vanessa Bryant has had to go through so much,” said lawyer and writer Exavier Pope.
“It’s not enough. What they put her through was reprehensible,” one woman added.
“Hope this will deter people from being gross & insensitive in the future (it won’t),” added a man.
Our thoughts and prayers continue to be with the Bryant family as well as the other families who lost loved ones in the crash.
