Jurgen Klopp has found an unlikely ally in former Manchester United midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger who agreed Liverpool were the better team at Old Trafford last night.

United secured the first win of Erik ten Hag’s tenure with a high-octane performance that could not have contrasted more with the displays that yielded defeats against Brighton and Brentford.

Klopp, however, argued his team, despite having been outrun and overpowered, deserved three points given the amount of attacking situations they created for themselves.

The German conceded his claim sounded ‘ridiculous’ given how far below their usual standards Liverpool fell, but Schweinsteiger agreed United’s gameplan was far removed from Ten Hag’s vision for the future.

He told the BBC: ‘I support United and I’m very happy that they won the match but was it a great performance?

‘In my opinion if I compare with other teams, like the top teams in Europe, I wouldn’t say so. For me Liverpool was the better team they had much more of the ball and possession in the game, but you know United did one thing really well and that was the right attitude. They had the right spirit in the team.’

Ten Hag made four changes to his starting line-up, but retained the services of his under-fire goalkeeper David de Gea who made two costly errors against Brentford last week.

‘Don’t forget De Gea yesterday he played very well he kept United in the game made some great saves,’ said Schweinsteiger. ‘Again, if I compare with top football in Europe thy were against the ball, were running, fighting, had the right attitude.

‘Transition-wise in the first 20 minutes it was very good but afterwards Liverpool was the better team and had much more of the game. They just couldn’t finish their last passes, otherwise they would have won the game.’

He added: ‘I think with Ralf Rangnick they had the right person to create something new which the club needed to do but it didn’t work out.

‘Now they have a very good manager with Erik ten Hag, I know him quite well from Munich because he was second team manager back in the day. They have the right man.

‘Is this the way United wants to play football, I don’t think so but it was survival mode yesterday. In the long-term he wants a to have a team which plays a different type of football. You can see he’s happy with the result but not 100% happy with how they played with the ball.

‘It will take time but he’s the right man, they need to find the right players and the people on the board who have the same vision.’
