Guitarist Henry Kaiser is one of the Bay Area’s most intriguing artists, whose quest to find new sounds and musical experiences once led him to the South Pole where he reportedly used said geographic marker as a guitar slide for playing Antarctic blues.
He’s also one of the most prolific, having performed on more than 300 albums during his versatile career.
Rome Yamilov is a Russian-born, San Jose-raised blues guitarist, known for his work with South Bay harmonica champ and bandleader Aki Kumar.
The two guitarists have joined forces on “The Lenoir Investigation,” an intriguing new offering from the Little Village music label.
The album is a tribute to J.B. Lenoir, the Mississippi-born singer-songwriter-guitarist who made a hefty mark on the Chicago blues scene in the ’50s and ’60. It’s great to see Kaiser and Yamilov tip their caps to this Blues Hall of Famer, whose career was cut short when he died from injuries sustained from a car accident at the age of 38 in 1967.
The album comes out May 20, littlevillagefoundation.com.
Kaiser and Yamilov will premiere the work in concert on June 2 at the Freight and Salvage in Berkeley. The performance is one of five world premieres featured that night from Little Village label acts. The other artists performing that night are Deshawn Hickman, Charlie Hunter, Diunna Greenleaf, Marina Crouse, Maurice Tani and Mike Schermer.
Show time is 8 p.m. and tickets are $20-$24, the freight.org.
