MUMBAI: The BCCI will conduct its much-awaited elections and Annual General Meeting here on October 18.
In a communication (TOI has a copy) to state associations on Thursday, BCCI secretary Jay Shah wrote: “Notice is hereby given that the 91st AGM of the BCCI, which will be held at Mumbai on October 18, 2022 to transact the business as per the agenda annexed herewith. The time and venue of the AGM will be informed in due course. The minutes of the 90th AGM, held on December 4, 2021, are attached herewith. Rest of the agenda papers will follow shortly. You are requested to attend the meeting.”
Most significantly, the agenda (this paper has a copy) of the notice for the AGM includes: “B. Election of the office-bearers of the BCCI-president, vice-president, secretary, joint secretary and treasurer.” It will be interesting to see if current BCCI president, former India Sourav Ganguly contests again for the post, and is re-elected, or, if speculation is to be believed, Jay Shah, presently the secretary and extremely popular amongst the state units, is elected as the new Board president. After the Supreme Court amended its order regarding the cooling-off clause on September 14, both can continue in their posts. Current Board treasurer Arun Dhumal’s name is doing the rounds for the new secretary’s post, but it won’t be surprising if the present status is persisted with for the sake of continuity.
As per item R of the agenda, the BCCI will also appoint its representative/representatives in the International Cricket Council, where currently Shah and Ganguly present India. It would be interesting to see if Ganguly, in case he vacates the Board president’s chair, is chosen for this position, or does the BCCI choose its former president N Srinivasan for that job. Items S) Update on ICC matters. T) To update on ICC Tax matters” of the agenda are extremely important as well. The BCCI has to decide if it wants to put up a candidate for the ICC chairman’s position, while ICC has sought tax relief for the 2023 ODI World Cup in India next year.
The AGM will also discuss an update on the soon to be launched Women’s IPL (listed under item X of the notice for the agenda ), which could include six teams, IPL media rights and the upcoming BCCI media rights, India’s Future Tour Programs & National Cricket Academy matters.”
On the same day, there will also be elections to choose one representative of the General Body in the Apex Council of the BCCI, two representatives of the Indian Cricketers’ Association (i.e. one male & one female) in the Apex Council of BCCI, two representatives to of the General Body in the Governing Council of the IPL, and one representative of the Indian Cricketers Association in the Governing Council of the IPL.
Crucially, the BCCI will also appoint a fresh Cricket Advisory Committee. The present committee includes just two members, RP Singh and Sulakshna Naik, after its chairman Madan Lal became ineligible as he turned 70. There’s also a vacancy for a fifth national selector’s slot from West Zone, after former India pacer Abey Kuruvilla had to exit the selection committee last December due to having completed his term in various selection committees.
This issue may be addressed under the under Items No BB and CC which mention: “Consideration of any business which the president may consider necessary to be included in the agenda”; and “Transaction of any other business of an informal character as may be permitted by the chairperson.”
The BCCI will also appoint an Ombudsman and Ethics officer in the AGM. In July this year, the BCCI had appointed retired Supreme Court judge Justice Vineet Saran as its Ombudsman and Ethics officer.
