Belgium hero Marc Desgryse believes that Eden Hazard underestimated his big-money transfer from Chelsea to Spanish giants Real Madrid.
Hazard left Chelsea in 2019 after spending seven years at Stamford Bridge, during which time he won two Premier League titles along with numerous individual awards.
The tricky winger’s Madrid career has so far been blighted by injuries and poor form, with the 30-year-old currently on a 10-match goalless streak for Carlo Ancelotti’s side.
But according to Desgryse, Hazard’s biggest problem was when he turned up overweight to his first ever training session at Los Blancos.
‘Incomprehensible. I still don’t understand it today. That he came to the first training with 7 kilos overweight,’ he told Het Laatste Nieuws.
‘It doesn’t matter if they were five. How do you do that? Gain five kilos in three weeks. It’s hard to understand that you start preparing like this.
‘Then he started training at the same pace as the other players, but that is not possible. First you have to get rid of those extra kilos.
‘As a result, he immediately suffered a muscle injury. And then he rejoined without having laid the foundations of a good season.
‘He seriously underestimated Real Madrid.’
The former Anderlecht and Club Brugge forward believes that Hazard should leave the Bernabeu in January in an attempt to rejuvenate his career.
Newcastle are among those reportedly interested in signing the Belgium international, a move that is backed by Desgryse.
‘Hazard has to go to a team in January where they count on him, where they make him important,’ he added.
‘Newcastle is ideal. All the balls will go to him. If he can keep Newcastle in the Premier League, it could give a new boost to his career.’
