Bella Ramsey discussed the difficulties of gendered awards for non-binary actors

When it comes to major award shows there are two categories for acting that capture the public’s attention. “Best Actor” and “Best Actress.” Recently though, there has been a movement to remove those gendered categories to be more inclusive of non-binary people. In a report for Vanity Fair, several non-binary actors opened up about the difficult decision on whether or not to participate given the lack of changes.

The Last of Us star Bella Ramsey said the whole idea of having to fit into one category made them “uncomfortable.” Ramsey explained, “The categories at the moment feel extremely gendered with the language around them.”

They went on to add that the limitations of categories meant that “non-binary actors like me can’t be celebrated.” Bella Ramsey went on, “And it can open up a conversation about how it feels—as long as I’m aware of the fact that it’s not ideal, but also that finding alternatives is really complex.”

Asia Kate Dillon discussed having been nominated in the Best Actor category for their role in Billions despite identifying as non-binary. “I now recognise that being submitted or nominated within categories that reinforce the gender binary should have been met with my outright rejection,” Dillon said adding it does seem like more and more actors are opening up about this issue.

The story goes on to explain that the award show organisers still aren’t moving very much on the issue. Hopefully, though, with more people speaking out up about it, things could change.
