Ben Affleck has admitted that a feeling of being “trapped” in his marriage to Jennifer Garner led to a spiral of alcohol abuse that would have probably continued if their union didn’t come to an end.

“I’d probably still be drinking. It’s part of why I started drinking … because I was trapped,” the Argo director told Howard Stern this week. “I was like ‘I can’t leave ’cause of my kids, but I’m not happy, what do I do?’ What I did was drink a bottle of scotch and fall asleep on the couch, which turned out not to be the solution.”
The Tender Bar star was married to Garner, 49, from 2005 to 2018, and said in his interview with Stern that he tried to work on their marriage for the sake of their three children: Violet, 16, Seraphina, 12, and 9-year-old Samuel.
“Ultimately, we tried. We tried, we tried because we had kids,” Affleck, 49, said. “The truth was, we took our time, we made the decision … We grew apart,” he explained.
“We had a marriage that didn’t work, this happens, with somebody that I love and respect, but to whom I shouldn’t be married any longer,” he said. “Both of us felt like we don’t want this to be the model that our kids see of marriage.”
But Affleck, who went to rehab multiple times, said the union ended on good terms.
“We did it amicably. We did our best. Did we have moments of tension? Did we have disagreements over custody? Was stuff difficult for us? Did we get angry? Yes, but fundamentally it was always underpinned with a respect,” he said. “I knew she was a good mom. I always hoped she knew I was a good dad. I knew I was.”

Elsewhere in his chat with Stern, Affleck conceded that the fallout from his split with Garner gave him pause before he decided to reignite a romantic relationship with Jennifer Lopez, to whom he was engaged from 2002 to 2004.

“It crossed my mind for sure,” he said. “Me and their mom are celebrities and that’s hard. Let’s not bulls— each other, right? That’s a f—ing cross to bear, that’s an albatross already … and then during the divorce, you know they printed horrible lies.”
Earlier this year, an insider told Us Weekly that Garner had given Ben’s rekindled romance with Lopez her “seal of approval.”
“As long as Ben stays on track and keeps the situation healthy, especially regarding the kids, then Jen is happy,” the source said.
