Ben Foster made his return to football last weekend as he came out of retirement to play for non-league Wrexham, the Welsh club owned by Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney. The former Premier League star admitted that while he kept a clean sheet, he was shocked by how much his voice had deteriorated since stepping away from the game originally.
Foster called time on his playing days at the end of last season after slowly moving towards becoming a squad player-come-YouTuber over the past few years having already enjoyed a long and successful career. The 39-year-old has enjoyed success on social media thanks to his vlogs – so his move to Hollywood-backed Wrexham felt like a match made in heaven.
The goalkeeper – who enjoyed stints at Manchester United, Stoke, West From and Watford across his career – will now be back at the Racecourse Ground until the end of the season. Foster first played for Wrexham back in 2005 when he was loaned out by Stoke City and went on to win his first-ever piece of silverware in the EFL Trophy.
The ex-England international is now looking to lead Wrexham back to professional football after a nudge from the manager Phil Parkinson as well as celebrity owners Reynolds and McElhenney. However, Foster revealed his voice was not up for the occasion even if he was.

“One thing that I did notice that I thought was a little bit funny: I was trying to shout and talk to my players but my voice just didn’t seem as loud,” Foster said on his podcast, the Fozcast. “It’s like my voice has deteriorated. I swear! I was shouting and I’m thinking, ‘No one can hear you!’”
Foster admitted it was due to the raucous attendance at the Racecourse Stadium, adding: “To be fair, there were 10,500 fans on a Saturday afternoon in the National League. There’s no country in the world that could copy or beat that.
“And then on the Sunday as well, the women’s team had a match – they had 9,500 fans. Nine-and-a-half-thousand fans at Wrexham Women’s on a Sunday afternoon is ridiculous!
“This club is going somewhere mate, honestly it is.”
Foster impressed on his return as Wrexham sealed a 2-0 win over York City to move three points clear at the top of the National League with a game in hand. Wrexham take on Oldham in their next contest on Saturday as the team chase promotion back to the Football League for the first time since 2008.
Back in November 2020, Deadpool star Reynolds teamed with McElhenney – famed for creating and starring in ‘It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’ – to purchase Wrexham for £2.25m. The duo have become symbols of Welsh football around the world with the publicity and exposure their platforms have bought to the club and the area, largely though the popular Disney+ documentary titled ‘Welcome to Wrexham’ – which was a hit in the United States, where the club will embark on a preseason tour this summer.
