Ben Stokes makes his World Cup 2023 plans clear for once and all: ‘I’m retired, going on holiday after Ashes’

Ever since Ben Stokes helped England win the T20 World Cup 2022 in Australia, fans and pundits have urged the star all-rounder to come out of his ODI retirement and feature in the World Cup. Even England’s limited-overs coach Matthew Potts had tried convincing Stokes.

He had opined in the past that inclusion of Stokes would give a tremendous balance to the English team which will try to defend its 50-over title. However, Stokes stayed firm on his decision he made in July last year. He said he has plans to go on a holiday after the fifth and final Test of the Ashes 2023.

“I’m retired. I’m going on holiday after this game [fifth Ashes Test] and that’s as far as I’m thinking,” Stokes was quoted as saying by ICC.

Stokes eyes Ashes 2025 glory in Australia

Further, Stokes continues to keep his focus on the longest-format of the game. The 32-year-old rued the missed opportunity to keep the Ashes 2023 alive by winning the fourth Test in Manchester. Notably, England missed a chance to level the series 2-2 at Old Trafford after rain washed out almost two days of play. However, the southpaw batter has shifted his focus on Ashes 2025 glory in Australia.

“I mean obviously how this series has gone and how close we were it does make you think when we go to Australia do we have a better chance than the last few times we’ve been there. Hopefully, it’d be nice to go out to Australia in 2025 and have a good chance of winning. It would be nice to say I’ve won it twice. There’s obviously a lot of cricket that’s played around the Ashes as well, but we’ll just see when 2025 comes around,” Stokes mentioned.
