Sunning ourselves in the great outdoors isn’t something us Brits get to do very much of, (even in the summer) so when we can, it’s essential that we have all that we need to keep us safe.
A recent study by Cancer Research UK and NIVEA SUN has revealed that, since lockdown, 35% of people don’t protect their skin at all when outside in their own space.
In fact, around 3.7 million of us still aren’t doing anything to prevent sunburn when the sun is at its strongest in the UK from the start of April to the end of September.
Thankfully, there are lots of after sun creams, gels and lotions dedicated to restoring and soothing sun damaged skin, and hydration is key.
This gentle rehydrating formula has added moisturisers and vitamin E. It contains Aloe Vera, Sunflower seed oil and grapeseed oil to sooth your sun-exposed skin leaving it feeling soft and smooth.

What helps a sunburn heal faster?
There are certain things you can do to help treat sunburn and aid the healing process:
- Stay out of the sun and direct sunlight
- Drink plenty of water to regulate your body temperature and rehydrate your skin
-
Apply aftersun cream or spray with soothing and cooling ingredients such as aloe vera
-
Cool your skin with a damp press or cool shower
-
Take painkillers such as paracetamol or ibuprofen to help reduce the immediate pain of sunburn
-
The anti-inflammatory properties of hydrocortisone cream can help manage swelling, itchiness and irritation for severe burns
Things to avoid
Severe sunburn can lead to heat exhaustion and heat stroke, which can be very serious.
- Do not pop any blisters that appear on the skin
- Don’t put ice or ice packs onto your skin to try and cool the burn down
- Don’t scratch or try to remove any peeling skin
- Do not use petroleum jelly on the affected areas
- Avoid wearing tight-fitting clothes over sunburnt skin
Is petroleum jelly good for sunburn relief?
While they may be fine when your burn is at the peeling stage, over-the-counter petroleum jellies are not recommended for fresh burns.
The heavier, thicker properties of petroleum jelly traps heat in, making you feel more uncomfortable, and can also cause allergic rashes.
For this reason, it’s always better to use a lightweight cream or spray that will soothe sunburns and let your skin breathe.
