The air quality inside your vehicle can degrade over time. Whether it’s from outside contaminants such as dust and dirt or everyday use, things just get filthy overtime. Higher-end newer vehicles come with HEPA filters and ionizers for the HVAC system to help keep inside air clean beyond the standard cabin air filter. Most cars on the road don’t have them.
That’s where portable and car-based air purifiers come into play. These purifiers plug into your vehicle’s 12-volt power system or run on their own battery supply and actively filter (and sometimes, ionize) the the cabin air. Not all car air purifiers are equal.
Some are standalone units that aren’t specifically designed for cars, while others require being plugged into your vehicle’s cigarette lighter or powered USB port. Additionally, some only filter the air while others ionize it. Some do both. Filtering happens like any other purifier—a motorized fan passes the air through a filter and sometimes, a certified HEPA filter, cleaning it as it passes through. Ionizing, which produces small amounts of ozone, helps eliminate tough odors. The fancier units do both.
To help you choose the right air purifier for you, we’ve rounded up a very small list of some of the best car air purifiers that you can buy. Other great and affordable options go beyond this list.
