New research from the team at Shepherd’s Friendly ranked cities around Europe to find the best destination for retirement.
The team rated cities based on the happiness rate, life expectancy and cost of living to find the best.
Madrid, Spain’s capital city, was named the best city in the world for retired expats, topping the list in several key factors.
The average life expectancy in the Spanish capital is 84 while the monthly cost of living is fairly low at £578.
An Irish city grabbed the second place on the list and could be a good option for Britons who don’t want to move far from home.
Expats will enjoy warmer temperatures in Madrid than in the UK although it’s not the hottest place in Spain.
One of the busiest areas in the Spanish city is Plaza Mayor, the square in the heart of the city.
A tourist wrote on Tripadvisor: “Phenomenal plaza in Madrid. I like this great plaza, you must come and see the beautiful building.”
Another tourist ‘JSinINDY’ wrote: “You can’t visit Madrid without a visit to the very impressive Plaza Mayor.”
Bergen in Norway came third on the list although the country was recently ranked the worst destination in Europe for expats.
Another Spanish city, Barcelona, grabbed the fourth spot and could be suited to expats looking for warmer weather than in Madrid.
