The clever trap is totally humane and can be made pretty easily with items at home. It takes advantage of the mice’s hungry stomach and gravity to trap the little creature.
Method:
- Create two small holes on either side of the bottle
- Thread the wire through the middle of the bottle
- Bend the ends of the wire to create a stand, allowing the bottle to rock on the stand
- Glue the stand to one end of the larger piece of PVC
- Then glue the smaller pieces of PVC in front of the open neck of the bottle, so that when the bottle pivots down the neck is covered
- Put some food in the bottle, so it sits at the far end away from the neck
When the mouse crawls into the bottle of food and then crawls back to the neck of the bottle to try and escape, the bottle will tip and the little mouse will be stuck. Then you can release the mouse outside, unharmed.

How to deter mice
There are a number of methods you can use to keep mice out of the home:
Keep food clean
Mice come into the home mostly to find food. Having food out will keep them interested in your home, even the smallest crumbs. Make sure you keep food sealed and cupboards clean.
Close entry points
Look for spaces in the home where mice might be entering. Cracks under doors should be sealed for example.
Use essential oils
It’s thought mice don’t like certain smells. Soaking cotton balls with essential oils like peppermint or clove in areas mice like to frequent might help keep them away.
Get a cat
One of the oldest tricks in the books for dealing with mice. Adopt a cat in need from a shelter. Not only will you give them a home, but they will repay you with occasional cuddles and free pest control.

Another content creator has shared an easy way to make another DIY humane mouse trap. All you need is a water bottle, a bucket, and a wooden rod.
TikTok dad @rezbluez, showed his DIY mouse trap, which he says is “cheap” and “works great” to catch and release mice.
He said: “Build this trap. [It’s] pretty easy. [It] doesn’t have to be a big bucket, as long as [there is a] bit of water in [the] bucket they won’t be able to jump out.” [SIC]
