Manchester United legend Paul Scholes has hailed Antony’s performance in the victory over Everton, insisting it was the best performance of the Brazilian’s career at Old Trafford.

Erik ten Hag’s side moved back into third place thanks to their 2-0 win in Saturday’s early kick-off.

United created 21 chances in a thrilling first-half but Scott McTominay’s 36th strike was the only one to find the back of the net with the hosts missing a number of chances before Anthony Martial wrapped up three points in the second-half.

Marcus Rashford, who later limped off with a worrying groin injury, and Antony were guilty of missing the best of those, with the latter three times breaking free down the inside right channel only to be denied by Jordan Pickford.

Despite the missed chances, Scholes was impressed with Antony’s performance on the right having tormented Everton’s Ben Godfrey who Sean Dyche replaced at half-time.

‘I used to think of him as a one trick pony,’ Scholes told BT Sport. ‘I think that was the best game I’ve seen him play for Manchester United today.’

The Frenchman has been beset by a variety of injury problems this season, having not started a game since January.

His goal on Saturday was his seventh in 17 appearances this season and with Rashford potentially facing a spell on the sidelines, Scholes emphasised the importance of keeping him fit for the season run-in.

‘It’s great to have him back, we all know the quality he has got but he has to stay fit,’ Scholes said.

‘He hasn’t got a good record fitness wise,’ Scholes said.

‘If he’s playing in this team [injury free] he’s scoring 20-25 goals.’

Victory briefly moved United back into third place but Newcastle United moved back ahead of them thanks to their 2-1 win over Brentford later in the afternoon.
