Best UK spots for ‘national pastime’ named – ‘feel the benefit’ of starting the year right

New Year’s Eve is a time for celebration, saying goodbye to the old and welcoming the new. But the first day of the new year is usually not the most exciting.

Many Britons have been using the day after end of year’s celebrations to raise money for charities, with Boxing Day and New Years Day swims.

Swimming events were planned all over the country, but with the ongoing pandemic, many were cancelled.

The Saundersfoot New Years Day Swim and the St Davids Penknife Club swim in Pembrokeshire were cancelled as the organisers said the event attracted too many participants and spectators to put it on safely.

Britons who missed out on the Boxing Day events and are not put off by the new year’s cancellations can still get their refreshing dip in one of the best wild swimming locations in the country.

Before taking the plunge, Britons who need a bit of motivation will want to know wild swimming has plenty of health benefits.

It reduces stress, boosts immune system and releases endorphins to give swimmers a natural high.

Matt Ovenden of Borrow A Boat named his favourite wild swimming spots in the UK.

He said: “The thrill that comes with wild swimming has meant it’s fast become a national pastime, with Britons taking the plunge in lakes, lochs, rivers and the sea, in far greater numbers than ever before.

DON’T MISS

“From Boxing day swims in little more than a festive hat to bracing dips in city ponds, there are so many brilliant ways to feel the benefits of wild swimming across the UK.”

Llyn Padarn, Snowdonia

Locals call this glacial lake the “local swimming pool” and while the waters are freezing, the views of snow-capped mountains should more than make up for it.

Hampstead Heath Ponds, London

Wild swimming can also happen in the city, with one of the most famous wild swimming spots in the capital.

Tenby Beach, Wales

Tenby sees many winter swimmers take to its waters, with a record 800 taking part in the last Boxing Day swim.

It’s a great place for a dip, with the beach here named one of the most beautiful in the world this year.
