Best ways to fill out the Hyrule Compendium in Tears of the Kingdom

Returning from Breath of the Wild, the Hyrule Compendium functions as an encyclopedia featuring nearly every enemy, animal, material, weapon, and notable object you can come across. In The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, you can gain access to the Hyrule Compendium after you unlock the Camera and get Robbie to relocate to the Hateno Ancient Tech Lab. The compendium won’t have any entries listed when you first open it up, so you will need to fill it out yourself. At least, you will need to if you wish to clear every sidequest Tears of the Kingdom has to offer. So what are some of the best methods one can use to add entries to the Hyrule Compendium?

Adding entries to the Hyrule Compendium in Tears of the Kingdom

Of course, the conventional method for filling the compendium involves using the Camera app to snap pictures of any notable objects as well as the flora and fauna you encounter. As long as you see the game highlight your subject when viewing it with your Camera, you can safely take the picture to acquire its respective compendium entry.

Taking pictures of materials or inanimate objects should take little effort, but doing the same for animals or monsters is naturally a bit trickier. In these situations, stand a safe distance away from your subject so it doesn’t run off or aggro toward you. By zooming into your subject by holding up on your d-pad, you can, hopefully, get the Camera app to recognize it so you can add it to your compendium. If you’re too far away, you can always adjust your positioning without getting too close to your subject.

If this sounds too tedious, you can instead opt for a far easier method. In the Hateno Ancient Tech Lab, you can spot an interesting-looking machine sitting on a table. This machine contains Robbie’s complete Hyrule Compendium list, and Robbie is more than happy to give away any entries you don’t have for a price if you wish. You can request Robbie to hand over a random entry from one of the Hyrule Compendium’s five categories.

Each entry costs 100 rupees, so if you want to fill out Tears of the Kingdom’s entire Hyrule Compendium this way, you will need to have quite a bit of spare change on hand. Even so, doing this takes much less effort than adding every entry manually, and it can prove especially helpful for certain bosses who only show up once in the story.
