Beyoncé thanked the queer community while making Grammys history

Beyoncé just broke the record for most Grammy awards of all time, and thanked the queer community in her historic acceptance speech.

During Sunday’s ceremony, the singer’s Best R&B Song award for “Cuff It” meant that she was tied for most Grammys of all time at 31, matched only by classical musician Georg Solti. She was pushed over the edge with her win for Best Dance/Electronic Album for Renaissance, which presenter James Cordon noted was a history-making moment.

When Beyoncé took the stage, she said that she was “trying not to get too emotional,” and that she was “just trying to receive this night.” First and foremost, she thanked God for “protecting me,” followed closely by her late Uncle Jonny, “who’s not here, but he’s here in spirit.”

In the liner notes for Renaissance, the performer described her Uncle Jonny as her “godmother and the first person to expose me to a lot of the music and culture that serve as inspiration for this album,” per The Cut. He was also gay and died of AIDS-related complications, which Beyoncé has previously described as “one of the most painful experiences I’ve ever lived.” 

After thanking her parents, her husband, and her children, Beyoncé accordingly thanked the queer community “for your love, and for inventing the genre.” 

“God bless you, thank you so much to the Grammys,” she said, closing her speech. 

The artist collaborated with a bevy of Black queer and trans icons on Renaissance itself, so for her to explicitly shout out the queer community on the Grammys stage is just further proof that Beyoncé truly practices what she preaches. And while she may have made Grammys history, it’s still yet to be seen whether or not she’ll take home the award for Album of the Year, which she somehow has never won.
