Every look in Beyoncé’s Renaissance World Tour wardrobe is a showstopper, from the silver Marine Serre catsuit she wore in Chicago to the custom Tiffany & Co minidress in Toronto. But even though she’s at the top of her game, that doesn’t stop her from continuing to raise the bar. At her July 26 show in Detroit, she debuted Pharrell Williams’s first-ever custom look for Louis Vuitton.
Since Beyoncé and Jay Z sat front row at Williams’s inaugural Louis Vuitton show last month in Paris, it was only a matter of time before the stars showed up in the designs once again. Williams, the newly appointed men’s creative director for Vuitton, created a glittering catsuit for the epochal singer’s sold-out show at Ford Field. Williams’s custom look features a riff on the brand’s instantly recognizable Damier pattern.
The catsuit isn’t only an exciting step in Pharrell Williams’s tenure at Louis Vuitton, but a display of remarkable craftsmanship. Every single Damier square was hand-assembled, an effort that resulted in over 1500 hours on just the embroidery. The costume also contains 8000 crystal silver beads, 5000 chrome spheres and 60,000 black pearls—all hand-embroidered.
Williams also took the opportunity to leave some Easter eggs. In an homage to Beyoncé’s fan base, the BeyHive, 10 golden bees made of strass rhinestones and black enamel were embroidered onto the suit. And in case that wasn’t a tall enough order, Williams also designed a series of custom Damier looks for the tour’s dancers, which—yes—includes Blue Ivy. Talk about a mother-daughter look for the ages.
