Bill Murray, one of the world’s most recognizable actors and one of UConn’s biggest fans, celebrated his son’s NCAA Tournament win in the most “dad” way.
You know him from Ghostbusters, Groundhog Day, and pretty much every Wes Anderson film. But famous UConn fan Bill Murray slipped into an Oscar-worthy proud dad role following the Huskies’ NCAA Tournament win.
On Monday, the Connecticut Huskies defeated the San Diego State Aztecs to be crowned the kings of March Madness, and one fan who supported the Huskies from the start was none other than beloved actor Bill Murray.
Murray’s son, Luke Murray, is an assistant coach for UConn, hence the proud badge of loyalty (Bill Murray actually grew up in Illinois and cheered for the Fighting Illini before his son started coaching at UConn).
Murray has been spotted cheering on the Huskies in each of the school’s NCAA Tournament wins from Iona to SDSU, and given his celebrity status, cameras would often cut to him during games, revealing the portrait of a beaming father.
This time, it was Murray who was taking pictures. After the game when his son climbed the ladder and prepared to cut the net, Murray held his phone with outstretched arms, one hand on top with his index finger pressed dangerously near the rim of the lens and one hand on the bottom with his thumb ready to smash the camera button. A classic, widely recognizable “Dad’s taking a picture” pose.

You love to see it.
Luke Murray joined the Huskies coaching staff in 2021, working with head coach Dan Hurley to guide UConn into the Final Four for the first time since 2014, when the program last won the national championship.
Prior to his stint at UConn, Luke coached for three years at the University of Louisville, and he was named one of ESPN’s top 10 coaches under 40 back in 2020.
He’s not quite as famous as his dad, but at least he’s blazing his own trail, choosing the life of a gritty college basketball coach over red carpets and spotlights — don’t call him a nepo baby.
After their NCAA Tournament championship win, the Huskies posted a picture on Twitter of Bill Murray posing with Jonathan the Husky, the school’s mascot, and asked half-jokingly, “Who’s more famous?”
Most users sided with Jonathan, which was no surprise. That adorable dog beats out John Bosley any day.
Murray nonetheless seemed overjoyed to be sharing this precious moment with his son. It was the Aztecs who unfortunately lost this game, and one might even say they lost in transition.
