West Coast’s wretched run of injuries has reached new heights, with a bizarre training incident ruling a premiership star out of Sunday’s clash with Melbourne at Optus Stadium.
Midfielder Dom Sheed is expected to spend the night in hospital after suffering a fractured larynx, caused by a stray elbow at training on Thursday, meaning the Eagles have been forced to make at least seven changes.
The 27-year-old has played all three matches in 2023 after getting on the park for just one last season.
The club has pulled the trigger on star utility Elliot Yeo after a calf complaint curtailed the start of his campaign.
It will be the 29-year-old’s first appearance since round 16, 2022.
Luke Shuey (hamstring), Jeremy McGovern (hamstring), Jamie Cripps (ankle), Liam Ryan (hamstring), Campbell Chesser (knee) and Alex Witherden (concussion) were all injured in a brutal western derby loss.
Promising youngsters Brady Hough and Jai Culley look set to make their returns to the senior ranks, while Connor West, Greg Clark, Luke Edwards, Jack Petruccelle, Xavier O’Neill, Luke Foley and Josh Rotham have also been added to the extended bench with final teams to be announced on Friday.
Foley had copped a one-match ban during a WAFL practice match last month.
The club confirmed to The West that Foley was eligible for AFL selection after not being available for round three. He remains ineligible for WAFL selection.
Vice-captain Tom Barrass will also lead the club for the first as captain with Shuey sidelined.
Adam Tomlinson, Tom McDonald, Luke Dunstan and excitement machine Kysaiah Pickett have been added to the Demon’s squad with key forward Ben Brown out injured.
