RICHMOND — The beloved Black Star Pirate BBQ at Point San Pablo Harbor in Richmond will close its doors in November.
Chef Tony Carracci and his partner, Miss Suzie, announced on Oct. 1 that they lost their lease for the building, a “hidden gem” tucked away on a serene stretch of the San Francisco Bay’s shoreline.
The restaurant’s last day will be Nov. 27 — eight more weeks of Southern comfort food and live music.
“We have had the best two years of our lives here at this harbor — it’s been so amazing, so great and y’all have made it so wonderful for us that it’s beyond words,” Carracci said in a video posted on the restaurant’s Instagram. “It’s sad, and we all want to cry, but you know what? It’s okay. We’re not going away, we’ll find a place. But for the next two months, October and November, come play with us.”
Located at1900 Stenmark Drive, accessible only by water or winding roads that pass Point Molate, the Black Star Pirate BBQ first began serving up plates of brisket, ribs, greens and cowboy beans in October 2020. Diners often raved about the sweeping ocean views from the restaurant’s outdoor patio, complete with houseboats and Burning Man art installations, while live bands provided the soundtrack, free of charge.
Black Star Pirate BBQ’s popularity skyrocketed during the pandemic, and was once dubbed “one part New Orleans, one part old-school Haight-Ashbury.”
Carracci, a former owner of several San Francisco restaurants and nightclub clubs in the 1980s and ’90s, will be keeping Southern comfort food, art and live music alive until details come together for Black Star Pirate BBQ’s next steps; in August, he and Suzie opened Baltic Kiss, located at 135 Park Place inside Richmond’s historic Baltic building, to cook up New Orleans-inspired fare, including candied pork belly, Creole-style barbecued shrimp and catfish po’boys.
But until the Black Star Pirate BBQ shutters for good at Point San Pablo Harbor, the owners don’t want a minute of quiet.
“We want you to all come out here and make it loud,” Carracci said. “We have eight more weeks — Friday, Saturday and Sunday, two bands a day. Check us out before we go, and just remember the magic that was created here by you all.”
