Born as Pranpriya Manoban in Bangkok, Thailand, the K-pop icon changed her name to Lalisa (which means “one who is praised”) at the advice of a fortune teller when she didn’t hear back after auditioning for YG Entertainment — Blackpink’s record label and a talent agency. In Thailand, it’s common to change your name to change your fortune.
According to Lisa, it worked. “The week after I changed my name, YG called me back and said, ‘You should come [be a trainee],'” she told Billboard. “I was like, ‘Wow!'”
