Oscar Pistorius will find out today if he is to be freed from a South African prison after serving nine years for killing model girlfriend Reeva Steencamp in 2013. The paralympic athlete shot Ms Steenkamp dead in the early hours of Valentine’s Day, firing four times through the bathroom door of his home in Pretoria.
Ms Steenkamp’s mother arrived at the Atteridgeville Prison, a low security jail just outside Pretoria, to give evidence at today’s parole board hearing, and will argue against his release.
Pistorius, who was convicted of the crime in 2014, was handed a six-year jail sentence two years later – but this was eventually increased to 13 years after an appeal by South Africa’s National Prosecuting Authority (NPA).
The 36-year-old recently met Reeva’s father, Barry, as part of a mandatory process refrerred to as “victim-offender dialogue”.
However, Mrs Steenkamp is unhappy that the six-time Paralympic gold medallist continues to insist he shot her by mistake, claiming he though she was a robber.
Initially, Pistorius was convicted of culpable homicide, but after an appeal appeal he was found guilty of murder, on the basis that he would have known shooting through the locked bathroom door would have resulted in the death of whoever was on the other side.
