Blaze at Jami Mosque in North Jakarta, Indonesia, causes collapse of massive domed roof

The massive domed roof of the Jami Mosque in North Jakarta, Indonesia, collapsed after the entire structure caught fire.

A fire that broke out on Wednesday, October 19, in the famous Jami Mosque in North Jakarta, Indonesia, led to the collapse of its massive domed roof. The blaze in the holy building occurred whilst maintenance work was being carried out on the structure.

The fire broke out in a lower part of the Jakarta Islamic Centre Grand Mosque but quickly engulfed the entire structure. Weakened by the destruction of its base, the huge dome suddenly fell in a cloud of thick grey smoke. Video footage posted on social media captured the incredible moment. According to local police sources, there were no injuries reported, but they added that four construction workers had been questioned over the cause of the fire.

Speaking with Metro TV today, Thursday, October 20, Heru Budi Hartono, Jakarta’s acting governor said: “We have discussed the possibility of continuing the renovation… the most important thing is that we can use the mosque again soon”.

The blaze raged for several hours before fire crews were able to bring it under control. An investigation was subsequently launched by the police to determine its cause. They said it was initially suspected that workers cutting the waterproof membranes used to clad the dome were responsible for sparks setting fire to flammable materials, as reported by insiderpaper.com.
