A BMW driver exited his car and jumped on the bonnet of another vehicle on the motorway.
The shocking incident unfolded this morning, December 20, with police saying it followed an “earlier altercation”.
It took place on the M56 westbound between J6 Hale Four Seasons Roundabout and J7 Bowden.
Police say they were called at around 10.36am to reports of a man driving a BMW getting out of his car and onto the bonnet of a Kia Niro on the busy motorway.
It followed an earlier altercation on the A555, reports Cheshire Live.
Emergency services raced to the scene and two out of the three lanes on the M56 westbound were closed, with major delays for motorists, while police dealt with the incident.
Police said that the man was being treated at the scene and enquiries into the incident were currently underway.
Motorists faced delays of around 25 minutes at one point.
A Cheshire Police spokesperson said: “At around 10.36am today (Tuesday 20 December) police were called following reports of an incident on the M56 westbound between junction 6 and junction 7.
“The incident involved the driver of a BMW, a man, who exited his vehicle and got onto the bonnet of the Kia Niro following an earlier altercation on the A555.
“Officers are currently at the scene and the man is being treated at the scene. Enquiries in relation to this incident are underway.”
At 12.56pm, National Highways North West reported that all lanes had now reopened.
However, motorists are being warned that there are residual delays of around 30 minutes.
Traffic monitoring site Inrix reported: “Traffic easing, earlier accident on M56 Westbound from J6 A538 Wilmslow Road (Hale Four Seasons Roundabout) to J7 A556 Chester Road (Bowdon).”
