The battery-powered Bavarian limo is also Bimmer’s quickest EV, with a zero-to-100-km/h sprint time of 3.7 seconds

BMW should arguably change what its initials stand for as it DC-fast-charges its way to electrifying its offerings. Sure, Bayerische Motoren Werke has history, but these days  I’d call it “Batteries! Mega-fast! Wow!” (Okay, fine, maybe I’ll keep my day job.) In any event, let’s have a quick chat about its upcoming 2024 i7 M70 xDrive, now the company’s most-powerful and quickest-ever electric offering.

The i7 M70 earns Bimmer’s “most powerful EV” title thanks to electric motors on both axles kicking out a total 650 horsepower and 748 lb-ft of torque (or 811 lb-ft when M Launch Control or the M Sport Boost function is activated). The sedan uses those ponies to breeze from zero to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 3.7 seconds, and, perhaps thankfully, the top speed is capped at 250 km/h. By the time your ears register the BMW IconicSounds Electric soundtrack composed by Hans Zimmer, you’ll likely already be at 100 km/h. Kidding, kidding—kind of.

Worried all this power will accelerate the battery’s energy consumption? The BMW i7 M70 xDrive posts a combined electric power consumption rating of 23.8 to 20.8 kWh per 100 kilometres in the WLTP test cycle, which is pretty good, considering its capabilities. The battery pack contains 101.7 kWh of usable energy, and the most important number here is the range, which is apparently some 474 kilometres.

A Level 3 charge maxes out at 195 kW, giving the driver back up to 170 kilometres in 10 minutes. (Hmm, maybe you can long-distance road trip in this.) How? It has a “MAX RANGE” mode that reduces drive power and top speed, enabling range to be increased by 15 to 25 per cent, according to BMW.

Pricing for this electric limo starts at CDN$185,000. Its global reveal happens at the Auto Shanghai international motor show (happening April 18 to 27, 2023) in China, and will be built at Plant Dingolfing, alongside all other 7 Series model variants.
