Famed Berkeley bagel maker Emily Winston has kept her word — and moved very quickly — on an expansion to the South Bay.
Winston, of Boichik Bagels, told the East Bay Times in the fall of 2021 about her plans to open more Bay Area bagel shops following the lease of a massive North Berkeley bagel warehouse. In addition to housing a cafe, the warehouse, slated to open this fall, will help Winston and her crew significantly increase production of their boiled, New York-style bagels.
And that means more bagel shops.
“People tell us they drive an hour from Palo Alto and San Jose for bagels, so the Peninsula is definitely a priority,” she said in September.
The newest Boichik location is slated to open at Palo Alto’s Town & Country Village this summer, as first reported by J. The Jewish News of Northern California.
Look for the same menu of eats, including 15 types of bagels, from plain and salt to onion and “pumperthingel,” plus seven housemade schmears, such as lox, chive and Hatch chile. Boichik also sells smoked salmon and housemade whitefish salad.
Winston hinted at bringing back some of the pastries, too, that helped launch her to stardom back in 2019, including rugelach and black and white cookies. You may want to keep an eye out for those in Palo Alto, too.
