IT sounds a fishy tale, but bonkers Brits have broken the world record for the number of mermaids in one plaice — sorry, place.

A total of 388 men, women and children scaled new heights yesterday by battering the previous best of 300.

They must now wait with baited breath until Guinness World Records confirm their amazing feat.

Organiser Pauline Barker said: “We’ve got so many smiley faces.

“Mereveryone had a great time in the sunshine to kick off the Jubilee.”

Strict rules at the 2022 Mermaid Challenge at Plymouth, Devon, saw participants having to squeeze into tight-fitting fishtail skirts reaching down to the ankles, with a flare covering the feet.

T-shirts were banned but bikini tops, bras and even clam shells were allowed.

Many wore brightly coloured wigs in the style of Ariel in Disney’s The Little Mermaid.

To ensure the event didn’t flounder, all had to sit still for five minutes to be counted at the seafront Tinside Lido.

They managed that swimmingly, to the relief of an RNLI crew on standby.
