Bosco’s Bones & Brews in Sunol reopens with new owners, renovation

The historic East Bay restaurant named after its city’s canine mayor is under new ownership.

Bosco’s Bones & Brews, named after the world-famous Labrador-Rottweiler who represented Sunol from 1981 until his death in 1994, celebrated its grand opening earlier this month following a big renovation. The restaurant, located at 11922 Main Street, is open daily from 8 a.m. for breakfast, lunch and dinner. And yes, it is definitely dog-friendly.

Owner Michael Miller, a longtime Sunolian, purchased the restaurant from original owners Mike and Joan Cerny, who opened it in 2005. The saloon-style eatery is known for classic fare, affordable prices and popular karaoke nights.

Miller’s changes include a complete kitchen overhaul and new floors in the dining room and ballroom. Restroom, heating and air conditioner upgrades are in the works, and more upgrades are expected in 2022, including an exterior paint job that will more closely match the historic building’s architecture.

The building, which dates back to the 1800s, once held a filling station, auto garage, distillery, brewery and bar frequented by Willie Nelson.

The food at Bosco’s will remain the same — Americana burgers, steaks and seafood — but with some modern touches.

“The menu is still developing as we try new and innovative recipes,” Miller told the East Bay Times. “We currently have tri tip for dinner and will be adding the much-requested prime rib in 2022.”

Look for breakfast, lunch and dinner served alongside craft cocktails and micro brews. And yes, if you order a Bosco brew the “tap” will pour beer when Bosco’s leg is lifted.
