Boston dealership sues over paperwork attack

A JaguarLand Rover dealership is suing a Rhode Island man it says is wasting its time and resources by filing fake liens against its inventory that amount to “paper terrorism.”

Herb Chambers Jaguar-Land Rover in Boston said in a complaint filed April 5 that the man’s “antics” are hindering its ability to do business. The dealership said Deric Thompson had expressed interest in buying a $147,497 Land Rover Range Rover Sport V-8 but failed to wire the money to the store as required.

Instead, it said, Thompson sent a “rambling, discursive and largely unintelligible letter” and a copy of a purported certificate of deposit underwritten by $3.5 quintillion in debts against the store. The CD claimed to be issued not by a bank, but by Thompson himself.

In February, Thompson filed a Universal Commercial Code form with the Massachusetts Secretary of State claiming to own 27 vehicles in Herb Chambers’ inventory. He tried to persuade the dealership to give him the Range Rover in exchange for releasing the debt he claimed it owed him, the suit says.
