Bottle-throwing footy fan is slammed

Premier Mark McGowan has called out sports fans following an off-field incident at a local soccer match.

Mandurah City and Rockingham City football clubs’ division one sides clashed on Saturday night in the WA state league, with Rockingham scoring a three-nil victory at Mandurah’s home turf.

The crushing defeat evidently upset some Rockingham fans, with footage showing a man stand up and pelt a Mandurah City player with a beer bottle as they walked to the change rooms after the game.

Volunteers and security tried to hold the man who threw the bottle, but he can be seen pushing his way past them to follow the players and berate them further.

Asked about the incident on Sunday, Premier Mark McGowan suggested alcohol was a factor.

“Sometimes people have a few too many drinks and they get too emotional and it can have devastating consequences. I just urge everyone to behave appropriately,” the Premier told reporters.

Earlier in the same match, play was stopped when an emergency flare was thrown on the field.

Football West, the body overseeing soccer in WA, said in statement that they’re aware of the incident.

“Football West will conduct a full investigation and will not hesitate to punish any parties found to have breached the Code of Conduct,” it reads.

While Nine News reports witnesses telling them the man was the father of a Rockingham player.

It comes about a month after a 29-year-old Caversham man was charged with unlawful wounding after smashing a glass bottle over the head of a 22-year-old man, putting him in hospital, following a game between Gwelup Croatia and Dianella White Eagles on April 1.
