Boxer Scott Fitzgerald issues heartfelt apology after worrying photos emerge

Scott Fizgerald has apologised to fans for being “a d***” after a number of worrying photos emerged of the champion boxer.

The unbeaten boxer holds wins over the likes of Anthony Fowler and Ted Cheeseman, but went viral for his antics outside of the ring last week.

Photos emerged of Fitzgerald outside of a pub last week that concerned fans, with Matchroom Boxing promoter Eddie Hearn offering to help the fighter with services.

And the former British champion has now responded to the concern over the photos, telling fans he’s sorry for causing concern.

“I mean all I can say is I’m saddened and shocked to see no-one has created a meme,” Fitzgerald joked on Twitter, before taking a more serious tone.

“Sorry to be a d*** and thanks everyone for the support.

“I’ll try my best to get back in the ring as soon as possible, I could do with an MRI and I’ll pay you back when my GIRO lands.”

And the boxer, who won the British title at super-welterweight from Ted Cheeseman back in 2019, has insisted he plans to return to the ring as soon as possible.

He relinquished his belt in 2020, but returned back in May, stopping Gregory Trenel within three rounds on the undercard of Derek Chisora’s fight with Joseph Parker.

When a fan said that they won’t rush him to get back in the ring, Fitzgerald joked that he wanted to get back so that he could buy an electric scooter.

“Thanks a lot mate but I fancy it soon as poss,” he told the supporter. “I want an electric scooter with all the lights on that does 40 mph.

“Don’t even need to ever get my licence back mate they [can] keep it.”

Last week, after hearing about Fitzgerald’s issues, promoter Hearn revealed that the situation was an ongoing one, with the boxer going to rehab last year.

“This has been an ongoing situation for over a year now,” Hearn told iFL TV.

“Scott went into rehab, into Sporting Chance, over a year and a half ago and we hoped he was moving in the right direction.

“When you have problems like that, boxing can be the saviour but it can also mask the problems. When you’re not in that environment, you go back into that bad place.

“The problem is that Scott doesn’t feel like he needs help, and he does need help.

“As bad as those pictures were, I’m hoping that is the moment he looks at himself in the mirror and says, ‘I do need help’.”

Fitzgerald had been told by Hearn after his win back in May that he “can’t f*** it up again”, and was expected to return just weeks later.

But after he didn’t fight again the following month, he went relatively quiet until the photos emerged last week.

“If people knew what he went through, I’m just pleased he’s back,” Hearn said at the time. “There were a lot of a times where I didn’t think he would be back, quite frankly.

“From where he was, he’s lucky to be here, you cannot f*** it up again.”
