Australia: Residents lay flowers after bouncy castle tragedy

A sixth child has died after a bouncy castle was flung 10 metres into the air by a freak gust of wind during a school celebration in Australia.

Chace Harrison, 11, died on Sunday afternoon after the tragic accident on Thursday as children celebrated the end of term.

Zane Mellor, Peter Dodt, Jye Sheehan, Jalailah Jayne-Maree Jones, all 12, and Addison Stewart, 11, were killed, while two other children are in a critical condition.

The children fell 10 metres after the bouncy castle was lifted at a primary school in Devonport, Tasmania.

“We all feel this terrible loss,” Tasmania Premier Peter Gutwein said at a media conference.

Chace Harrison has become the sixth victim of Thursday’s bouncy castle tragedy

He said that around 40 children were present when the horrific accident unfolded.

Mr Gutwein stated: “We know it is difficult for those involved so we want to make sure we have the best services interview all those children who are affected.

“We have to do it in a sensitive manner, and we have accepted the offer of NSW Police to accept their assistance.”

Police said it was too early to say when they would complete an investigation into the cause of the accident and need to respect grieving families and the school community.

“We don’t want to rush it, but we also understand that the community wants answers,” Tasmania Police Commissioner Darren Hine told reporters.

The state has called in help from New South Wales state police to help interview the other grade five and six children who were at the event.

A report is being put together to give to a coroner.

Support is being offer to their pupils, their families and staff and counselling has also been offered to first responders.

A GoFundMe page was set up shortly after by Zoe Smith, who describes herself as a ‘Davenport girl moved by the incident’ and hoping to help the grieving families get through Christmas.

The page has raised just over £145,000 so far. All funds will be donated to the school and the Parents and Friends committee to be distributed to the families.

A second GoFundMe page was launched by the partner of Zane’s dad, Denitta Ryder, to help her partner “grieve with family at home”.

She wrote on the campaign: “My partner Tim lost his son today Zane in the terrible tragedy at Hillcrest primary school.

“Any help that can be given so Tim can take some time off work to grieve with his family would be very much appreciated.

“RIP Zane – we love you always & forever. Our hearts go out to all the families involved.”
