A 12-year-old Alabama boy confessed to police that he, not an intruder, fatally shot his mother in their home.

Ayobiyi Cook, 29, was found dead in her Forestdale, Ala., home on Aug. 6.
Her son, whose identity has not been released, originally told cops that an intruder entered the house.
“There appeared to be no forced entry into the home and a man was seen fleeing from the residence shortly before the 911 call was made,” the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office said in the initial news release.

However, investigators determined there was something off about the boy’s story and “eventually gave a true account of what happened.”
The boy accidentally discharged the weapon, striking his mother,” Deputy Chief David Agee said in an updated statement.
“The child eventually gave a true account of what happened,” Deputy Chief Agee said in a second release.
“Evidence on the scene supports that the shooting was unintentional and the offense will be addressed through the Family Court system,” he continued.
“The family has been cooperative throughout the process and the child will remain with them.”
