Recent episodes of The Mandalorian have come with several surprise cameos, though big fans of Breaking Bad may have been most excited to see an appearance from Charles Baker. In Breaking Bad, along with its follow-up film El Camino, Baker played the roll of Skinny Pete, a close friend of Jesse Pinkman (Aaron Paul) and Badger (Matt Jones). Fast forward to Baker’s cameo in the world of Star Wars, which saw him going from playing a meth dealer to a Mandalorian. At the time, the cameo got a lot of attention from Breaking Bad fans stoked to see the actor popping up in a completely different show.
On Instagram, Baker would also weigh in on his role in The Mandalorian. He points out the similarities between the Star Wars show and Breaking Bad, starting with the Giancarlo Esposito connection. Along with playing The Mandalorian‘s Moff Gideon, Esposito had first built a criminal empire as Gustavo Fring in the Breaking Bad world, and Baker seems to be amused by what else the actor’s characters have in common.
“Wherever [Giancarlo Esposito] goes to create his evil Empire, I will be there, along with some dude and his young protege, to stop him…This is the way,” Baker says on Instagram, sharing an image of an article about his cameo.
While Baker hadn’t previously announced his arrival in the series, he recently showed off his love for The Mandalorian. When celebrating his birthday back in February, Baker shared an image of himself wearing snuggly Mandalorian attire, complete with a Grogu-style hood. Who knew he’d literally be on the show just a matter of weeks later?
Will Breaking Bad Fans Ever Again See Skinny Pete?
The Skinny Pete character played a vital role in the plot for El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie in 2019. Many fans were hoping to see him also popping up in the prequel series Better Call Saul, perhaps alongside Matt Jones’ Badger, but the two ultimately did not appear before that show’s end. The future of the franchise isn’t entirely clear, as Better Call Saul‘s creators are now focusing on separate projects with no plans to develop any more spinoffs in that world. But there has been enough demand from fans to see more of Skinny Pete and Badger, and for what it’s worth, Baker would be right there to return if any more Breaking Bad shows or films ever get made.
“There are lots of people definitely asking,” Baker said of a potential spinoff focusing on Skinny Pete and Badger, via eBaum’s World. “I trust Vince Gilligan and that crew to know what’s right and to know what will work, and if they don’t want to force it, I don’t want to be part of that.” I would happily jump into that role again if they could find a way for it to make sense and make it work. But not just for the sake of money, but because they feel it’s necessary, you know?”
He added, “I love the character, I love the role, it’s just, you know, how much longer can I play a young drug addict, at this point and keep that kind of energy? I’d be happy to do it if they ever wanted to, but I don’t know that they would. I don’t know there’s a reason for it.”
Perhaps joining Star Wars is the next best thing. You can stream The Mandalorian on Disney+.
