According to a prominent sports journalist, a legendary player for the New York Knicks reportedly died this morning.

Peter Vecsey says that Knicks legend Willis Reed died on Tuesday morning at the age of 80. Vecsey said Reed suffered from congestive heart issues for about a year and was undergoing rehab in order to walk.

Reed had a Hall of Fame career as a player, but he is best known for one of the most iconic moments in NBA history.

After suffering a torn thigh muscle during the 1970 NBA Finals and missing Game 6, Reed surprised the world by playing through the injury in Game 7. The Knicks defeated the Lakers in Game 7 to win the title, cementing Reed’s legacy as one of the greatest players of all time after he won Finals MVP for his effort.

Reed would go on to win another title with the Knicks – and another Finals MVP – in 1973. To date, it is the Knicks’ most recent NBA championship. He also won the Rookie of the Year and MVP awards in his career, and was a 7-time All-Star.

Following his playing career, Reed was named to both the NBA’s 50th and 75th anniversary teams.
