The NBA has fined the Dallas Mavericks $750,000 for “conduct detrimental to the league in an elimination game against the Chicago Bulls on April 7.”
The league released an official statement regarding the punishment on Friday:
“The Mavericks violated the league’s player resting policy and demonstrated through actions and public statements the organization’s desire to lose the game in order to improve chances of keeping its first-round pick in the 2023 NBA Draft. The league did not find that the players who participated in the game were not playing to win.”

In a must-win game to earn a possible Play-In spot, the Mavs sat Kyrie Irving and several other key players for the entire contest. Luka Doncic played the first quarter before sitting out for the rest of the game.
Dallas blew an 11-point fourth-quarter lead and were eliminated from the postseason with their 115-112 loss to the Bulls.
“The Dallas Mavericks’ decision to restrict key players from fully participating in an elimination game last Friday against Chicago undermined the integrity of our sport,” Joe Dumars, head of basketball operations/executive vice president for the NBA, said. “The Mavericks’ actions failed our fans and our league.”
