NBA spokesman Mike Bass says the league has commenced an investigation into the Dallas Mavericks. The investigation will go “into the facts and circumstances” around last night’s game against the Chicago Bulls, including into the Mavericks’ roster decisions and game conduct,
Bass says the league will be taking a look at the motivations behind the Mavericks’ actions.
The Mavericks, who at the start of last night’s game were mathematically alive in the playoff race, sat several rotation players for all or most of the game against the Bulls. Kyrie Irving did not play at all, and Luka Doncic only played in one quarter.
Comments from head coach Jason Kidd before the game on Friday seemed to indicate that the team had given up on the season.
“We were fighting for our lives and this is the situation we’re in,” Kidd said Friday. “The organization has made a decision to change and we have to go by that.”
The NBA expressly warned teams against tanking ahead of the season – an especially pertinent warning given the emergence of consensus No. 1 pick Victor Wembanyama.
