BREAKING UPDATE: Watch footage of the gas explosion in Russia

18:34 (November 19) – Authorities in St Petersburg have said that the explosion took place at a gas station near the village of Berngardovka in the Leningrad region.

The Ministry of Emergency Situations of Russia, said a “depressurisation” occurred on the gas pipeline.  The cause of the depressurisation is still unknown with the pipeline being switched off to kill the flames.

According to local emergency services the six gas distribution stations were disconnected and are being transferred to a backup supply line.

They said: “After that, gas services within four hours will restore the supply of gas to boiler houses and residential buildings of the Vsevolozhsky district.” 


14:52 (November 19) – A huge explosion has rocked St Petersburg in the Leningrad region of Russia, which is thought to have occurred at a petrol filling station.

The explosion, which happened in the later afternoon on Saturday, November 19, can be seen from kilometres away in numerous videos posted online.

Two emergency crews are said to be on the scene according to local authorities, who say that: “There is no threat to the population and the spread of fire to residential areas.

“The causes of the explosion are being established.”

A spokesperson for the administration of the Vsevolozhsky district told state news agency TASS that no further details are available at the moment.

Investigations into the cause of the blast will begin once the blaze has been extinguished and the site declared safe for forensics officials to begin their examination of the site.

It is not thought that the huge explosion which rocks St Petersburg is related to the conflict in Crimea.
