Belgium’s Luca Brecel is three frames away from becoming the Cazoo World Champion, after a sublime session of snooker left him 15-10 up on Mark Selby heading into the final night at the Crucible.
The 28-year-old is aiming to become the first player from continental Europe to capture the Crucible crown. While 39-year-old Selby is conversely going for his fifth world title.
Brecel withstood a second session barrage from Selby yesterday evening, which included the first ever 147 to be made in a world final, to hold a 9-8 overnight lead. When play got underway this afternoon, the Belgian Bullet turned up the heat on the Jester from Leicester.
Breaks of 113, 101 and 141 saw Brecel sensationally surge to the first four frames of the day and lead 13-8 heading into the mid-session. When play got back underway Selby made his move, claiming tightly contested 22nd and 23rd frames to pull within three at 13-10.
Brecel showed no signs of folding and his fourth century of the session, a break of 119, saw him extend his lead to 14-10. Selby had the initiative in the last of the afternoon, but missed a red with the rest leading 40-1. Brecel got back into the frame and eventually took it with a brilliant break of 40 to end five ahead.
They return at 7pm for the concluding session of the tournament.
