Selby’s momentous 147 break comes in the 40th anniversary of Cliff Thorburn making the first ever Crucible maximum.
Luca Brecel holds a 9-8 advantage after day one of the Cazoo World Championship final, but Mark Selby took the second session and made history with the first ever 147 break in a Crucible title match.
The showdown sees Belgium’s swashbuckling Brecel aiming to become the first player from continental Europe to claim snooker’s biggest prize. England’s Selby is gunning for a fifth world title and has shown every facet of his game during this year’s event. He slogged it out to get over the line at 12:45am in last night’ s semi-final with Mark Allen. This evening Selby produced a moment of magic and a session of break building brilliance.
Brecel came into tonight holding a 6-2 lead, after an impressive showing in this afternoon’s opening session. Selby did his best to turn up the heat straight away and he did just that with a sublime 134 break. Brecel responded with 99 to lead 7-3, before 22-time ranking event winner Selby made it 7-4 with 96 in the 11th. Selby then took a tense 12th to head into the mid-session just two frames behind at 7-5.
When play resumed it was 28-year-old Brecel who seized the momentum and he made contributions of 72 and 67 to extend his advantage to 9-5. Selby took the 14th frame, before a moment of sporting brilliance sent the Crucible Theatre into raptures. The Leicester cueman fired in a flawless maximum 147 break and embraced both Brecel and referee Brendan Moore, whilst revelling in creating snooker history.
Brecel had looked set to dampen his opponent’s celebrations when he made 48 in the last, but Selby made him pay for a missed red to set up a mouth watering final day in Sheffield tomorrow. They resume at 2:30pm with Brecel one ahead at 9-8.
