The travel recovery has been a mixed bag, with even the FAA feeling the pinch. But new budget airlines like Breeze Airways are among the bright spots as Americans travel again.
Breeze is flying forward despite the growing pains of starting up during a worldwide pandemic.
Part of their secret of success? Popular prices. The airline is celebrating its second birthday this May with an airfare sale promoting their launch of dozens of nonstop routes nationally this summer.
Breeze Airways now offers a mix of 147 year-round and seasonal nonstop routes between 36 cities in 22 states. These include Orange County, CA, San Francisco, Nashville, Huntsville, AL, Las Vegas, Tulsa, Savannah, New Orleans, New York, Cincinnati, Akron and six cities in Florida.
In California, summer sale fares start at $34 out of San Bernardino airport. Breeze’s Seriously Nice™ Summer Fare include fares from San Bernardino, CA to Las Vegas, NV staring from $34 one way. Flights from San Bernardino to San Francisco, CA start at $49. Flights from Orange County-Santa Ana, CA to Provo, UT start at $49 one way.
The low fares are also offered on more than 40 other routes across the U.S. But you’ll have to act fast—the sale prices are only through May 8, 2023.
Of course there’s some fine print with the low-price offers.
The promotional fares must be purchased from May 2, 2023, through May 8, 2023 (11:59 pm ET), for travel from May 31, 2023, through June 20, 2023. Promotion excludes travel from PWM, MCO, PHX, and LAS on Sundays or Mondays. Fare prices, rules, routes, and schedules are subject to change without notice. Other restrictions and blackout dates may apply.
The company is headquartered in Cottonwood Heights, Utah outside Salt Lake City. It operates a fleet of 29 Embraer 190/195 and Airbus A220-300 aircraft. Breeze has ordered a total of 80 A220s, with options for 40 more.
Breeze offers both Economy and First-Class seating. Seat pitch for a Standard Economy seat is 30 inches on the A220s and 31 inches on the E-195s, while seat pitch for Extra Legroom is 32 inches on the A220s and between 34 and 39 inches on the E-195s. First Class seats feature 39 inches of seat pitch, 20.5 inches of seat width, a footrest for added comfort, and in-seat AC power and USB/C ports.
Breeze says that they’re not a typical ULCC (Ultra Low-Cost Carrier) but instead a NLCC, or Nice Low-Cost Carrier, with a mission of “Nice people, flying nice people to nice places.” Its tagline is Seriously Nice.
They’ve even built their marketing around it. Instead of the usual Silver, Gold and Platinum levels of service (never Bronze) Breeze tickets are sold as Nice, Nicer and Nicest. The Nicest bundle includes two checked bags, a first-class seat and complimentary snacks and beverages, including alcohol.
Breeze says it doesn’t charge change or cancellation fees “up to 15 minutes prior to departure.” Instead, it offers up to 24-months of reusable flight credit.
The Breeze website and app also allows you to set up complimentary family seating. This may sound like no big deal, but the big airlines lowest-cost offering, basic economy, specifically says you cannot book with to be seated with a traveling partner or friend. As Delta’s booking website says of its basic economy tickets, “No seat(s) assigned until after check-in, not together.”
Breeze is the latest airline founded by aviation entrepreneur David Neeleman, who also helped found Morris Air, WestJet, JetBlue, and Azul Linhas Aereas.
Like fellow start-up Avelo, Breeze says its focused on providing efficient and affordable flights between secondary airports, bypassing hubs for shorter travel times.
“Since Breeze started flying two years ago, we have been serious about igniting positive change within a stagnant, oftentimes unfriendly, industry through our low fares, flexible polices, efficient flights and Seriously Nice Team Members and experience,” said Neeleman, Breeze Airways’ Founder and CEO. “We are going ‘all in’ this May with dozens of new flight inaugurals and our lowest fares right ahead of the summer season.”
