Thunderstorms brewing in the D.C. area have led to a ground stop at D.C.-area airports Friday afternoon.
Planes cannot take off or land at Reagan National, BWI Marshall and Dulles International airports due to thunderstorms hovering near the Winchester, Virginia, area.
The National Weather Service has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning for central Montgomery County, Maryland, in effect through 5:30 p.m.
According to the weather service, a storm was spotted over Gaithersburg, Maryland, moving east at 15 mph. Quarter-size hail and wind gusts up to 60 mph are possible.
Another Severe Thunderstorm Warning is in effect for northwestern Loudon County in Virginia and southwestern Frederick County in Maryland until 5:15 p.m.
“Some storms will have the potential to become strong to severe with brief gusty winds, hail and pockets of moderate to heavy rain,” said 7News meteorologist Steve Rudin.
Storms are expected to end after midnight, according to WTOP meteorologist Mike Stinneford.
