News on James Harden’s offseason plans could affect former teammate Kyrie Irving.
Per ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, Harden is picking up his $35.6 million player option with the Philadelphia 76ers. However, the two sides are expected to pursue a trade.
On Thursday’s Pardon The Interrupted, via Dave Early of Liberty Ballers, Brian Windhorst speculated that Irving could explore the possibility of taking Harden’s spot on the 76ers.
“I would not be surprised if we see Kyrie want to investigate what’s going on in Philadelphia,” Windhorst said. “If Harden moves out, if there’s a window for him to come in.”

According to Bleacher Report’s Chris Haynes, Irving is expected to meet with the Dallas Mavericks and Phoenix Suns once free agency begins Friday. The star point guard could now have another option depending on Philadelphia’s agenda.
Irving averaged 27.1 points, 5.5 assists, and 5.1 rebounds per game last season. However, he again became the center of controversy when getting suspended for sharing an antisemitic movie and book on social media.
And despite his gaudy numbers, the Mavericks missed the play-in tournament after acquiring the eight-time All-Star from the Brooklyn Nets.
Windhorst also wondered about Philadelphia using a return from a theoretical Harden trade to pursue Damian Lillard. The 76ers are now a central point of interest for NBA offseason activity.
