A bridesmaid has spoken of her heartbreak after she and her family were struck by Covid just days ahead of her sister’s wedding.

Niamh Lyons was forced to give up her role after testing positive for the virus before the big day.

Her dad, brother and two children also came down with coronavirus – and had to tune in on Zoom to watch the nuptials, the Irish Mirror reports.

Niamh was supposed to be her sister Geena’s bridesmaid, however, their friend Emma had to fill her shoes for the day, as the bride told 2FM ’s Jennifer Zamparelli; “I’m really going to miss my sister.”

She explained: “It’s a really small wedding and Niamh was my only bridesmaid, so I’ve three sisters, but Niamh is not just my sister, she’s my best friend.

“I’m really going to miss her. We were looking forward to it for so long, planning hairstyles, makeup looks and dresses so yeah I’m just really upset that she’s not here and my dad and brother and niece and nephew and brother in law.”

Geena walked down the aisle today at the stunning Castlemartyr resort in Co Cork, Ireland, surrounded by 25 other members of her family and friends.

Her sister Niamh, from Mooncoin in Co Kilkenny, said: “I can’t describe how sad I am today, but I have to keep positive for Geena.

“My husband has escaped it [Covid] thank god,” however, he chose to not attend the wedding without her.

Geena’s brother Paul escaped the virus and was able to attend the wedding

Niamh continued: “We’ve been planning it now for the year, so it hasn’t really hit me yet but we’re going to tune in today by Zoom, so we will be able to be there for the speeches.”

Geena revealed that her mum was going to walk her down the aisle in place of her dad, but said that “they’ll be in our hearts.”

“My mom is going to walk me down the aisle, so she’s going to step in for my dad,” she said.

“They can tune in and they’ll be in our hearts anyway today and we will celebrate again in the New Year when everyone is over Covid.”
