Topline

Britney Spears released a video Tuesday celebrating newfound freedoms after being released from a conservatorship that has controlled her life and finances for more than a decade, thanking her fans for their support and vowing to advocate for people living under conservatorships in one of her most detailed remarks on the matter outside of a courtroom.

Key Facts

In a video posted to social media, Spears said she is grateful for “the little things” now she has been released from the conservatorship, including being able to drive her own car, owning an ATM card, “seeing cash for the first time” and buying candles.

Spears said she has been living in the conservatorship for 13 years—“a really long time to be in a situation you don’t want to be in”—describing it as “embarrassing,” “demoralizing and degrading.”

Spears explained that she is not here “to be a victim” and wants to be an advocate for “people with real disabilities and real illnesses” living under conservatorships.

Spears said she hoped her “story will make an impact and make some changes in the corrupt system.”

The singer also thanked her fans and supporters in the #FreeBritney movement for raising public awareness of her situation, saying the group “saved my life.”

What To Watch For

Spears hinted a tell-all interview with Oprah Winfrey was on the cards, writing the video was to give “a hint of my thoughts… before I go and set things square on Oprah.”

What We Don’t Know

Spears has previously said she wants to sue her father—Jamie Spears—for conservator abuse. Jamie Spears has administered his daughter’s estate and personal matters (he stepped down from this aspect of the conservatorship in 2019) for most of the time since it was implemented in 2008. Since the conservatorship was lifted, the Daily Mail reports the singer has hired forensic accountants and plans to sue. In the social media post, Spears said it ”still blows my mind every day I wake up how my family and the conservatorship were able to do what they did to me.” Though used to “keeping peace for the family and keeping my mouth shut,” the singer said she will “not this time.”

Key Background

Spears had been trying to end her conservatorship—which gave its managers an incredible amount of control over her personal and business affairs—for years. A court initially placed Spears under the conservatorship in 2008 following a series of mental health crises and public breakdowns and it was initially successful in reviving the singer’s business affairs, which moved from debt to a net worth of over $60 million. This summer, Spears ramped up efforts to lift the conservatorship and made claims of abuse in court testimony, including preventing her removing a contraceptive device and medicating her with lithium—a mood stabilizer most commonly used to treat bipolar disorder—against her wishes. Jamie Spears was suspended from his role as conservator in late September, though strenuously denies wrongdoing, and the conservatorship terminated in mid November.
